Tanzanite is the blue and violet variety of the mineral zoisite. Tanzanite is only found in Tanzania, in a very small mining area near the Mererani Hills. Given the name “Tanzanite” by Tiffany & Co., the "blue-violet zoisite" was first introduced to the market in 1968. In 2002, the American Gem Trade Association chose tanzanite as a December birthstone, the first change to their birthstone list since 1912. Many believe that Tanzanite has the ability to banish negative thoughts from the owner's life, and helps them be less influenced by outside opinions. It also changes hue based on the lighting around it, and this is thought to change the wearer’s consciousness. Tanzanites are noted for their remarkably strong trichroism, appearing alternately sapphire blue, violet and burgundy depending on the crystal orientation. They also appear differently when viewed under alternate lighting conditions. The blues appear more evident when subjected to fluorescent light and the violet hues can be seen readily when viewed under incandescent illumination. Tanzanite forms as a brownish crystal and is trichroic, which means it shows three colors – brown, blue and violet – concurrently. Heating, either underground naturally by metamorphic processes, or artificially, removes the brown or burgundy color component to produce a stronger violet-blue color. Tanzanite is currently being credited as being the most popular gemstone on the market. It is one of the rarest gemstones on Earth, and because it is only found in one location, geologists estimate its supply may be entirely depleted within the next 20 years.
