Tanzanite is the blue and violet variety of the mineral zoisite. Tanzanite is only found in Tanzania, in a very small mining area near the Mererani Hills. Given the name “Tanzanite” by Tiffany & Co., the "blue-violet zoisite" was first introduced to the market in 1968. In 2002, the American Gem Trade Association chose tanzanite as a December birthstone, the first change to their birthstone list since 1912. Many believe that Tanzanite has the ability to banish negative thoughts from the owner's life, and helps them be less influenced by outside opinions. It also changes hue based on the lighting around it, and this is thought to change the wearer’s consciousness. Tanzanites are noted for their remarkably strong trichroism, appearing alternately sapphire blue, violet and burgundy depending on the crystal orientation. They also appear differently when viewed under alternate lighting conditions. The blues appear more evident when subjected to fluorescent light and the violet hues can be seen readily when viewed under incandescent illumination. Peacock Tanzanite is a rare, untreated version of the well known Zoisite. The green to greenish-blue color zoning is due to the trace element Chromium. Peacock Tanzanite is a beautiful blend of purple, blue and green that resembles the captivating colors of Peacock Feathers. While peacock tanzanite may undergo heating during stone production, this does not create color within peacock tanzanite. The colors occur naturally. Heating tanzanite only produces the blue and violet colors for which the stone is known so the green and brown tones can only be found in natural untreated specimens. Tanzanite is currently being credited as being the most popular gemstone on the market. It is one of the rarest gemstones on Earth, and because it is only found in one location, geologists estimate its supply may be entirely depleted within the next 20 years.
